Community owned for community benefit
We are a small social enterprise who run the largest community-owned wind turbine in Ceredigion. Our turbine generates enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 450 homes for a year.
Our turbine is predicted to generate 1,743 MWh of electricity per year.

Grannell Community Energy was formed in 2016 and came about from the passion of a few local people who wanted to help address climate change, meet future energy needs, and strengthen the local community.
Our group came together to help progress plans for a wind turbine on the Evans’ family farm, who have been farming beef and sheep in the area for generations. We now run a refurbished 500kW Enercon E48 wind turbine sited on their farm.
- 613 tonnes of CO2 saved
- Enough electricity to supply 446 homes
- Upwards of £8,500 annually for local community fund
Our turbine will supply around 446 average UK homes (half of the Llanfihangel Ystrad Ward) with their domestic electricity usage and reduce UK CO2 emissions by about 613 tonnes per year.
We are also committed to putting upwards of £8,500 every year into a community fund. This will be available to support local community groups through a variety of projects which benefit local people, sustainability and other local needs.

Our turbine
The turbine was commissioned in October 2019 and is a second-hand Enercon E48 turbine capable of generating a maximum of 500kW of electricity. Since the turbine was commissioned, it has generated over 5.5 million kWh generation, reaching the first key milestone of 1 million kWh by May 2020.

Community benefit fund
One of our major objectives for the construction of the turbine is to strengthen the rural community close to the turbine by improving community facilities. GCE will create a community fund which will be spent within the communities of Llanwnnen, Llanfihangel Ystrad, and Lampeter.
Selling the electricity produced by our wind turbine provides us with a regular income stream. It is from this surplus income that we can meet our social objectives and provide upwards of £8,500 annually for our community benefit fund.
